The Isolation of Transgender Patients
Many transgender patients who are homeless or marginally housed are disconnected from primary medical care. Their isolation and feelings of mistrust may be magnified by both real and perceived negative experiences within the mainstream health care system.
Dedicated Services from Trained Providers
The Transgender Program opened in November 2008 to address these challenges with a unique, integrated service model. Medical and support services are offered within a culturally appropriate framework by trained providers at a dedicated time in a safe place.
The BHCHP Transgender Program is the only clinic of its kind serving transgender people in Boston who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Services include:
- Primary care
- Walk-in urgent care
- Behavioral health care
- Crisis intervention
- HIV counseling and testing
- Case management
- Weekly support group
- Free legal clinic offered monthly by MA Transgender Legal Advocates
